What do UTM parameters tell you?
UTM parameters are labels on an incoming link. Source identifies the publisher or platform, such as a newsletter or Instagram. Medium describes the channel, such as email or paid_social. Campaign ties related links together. Optional content distinguishes two creatives or placements. In GA4, these labels help you compare incoming campaigns in traffic acquisition reports when Analytics is configured and able to collect the visit.
A naming convention you can keep
Use consistent lowercase values and a recognisable campaign name such as autumn_launch. Values are case-sensitive, so Email and email can split reporting. Keep customer names, email addresses, phone numbers and private information out of URLs. The builder replaces the seven UTM fields it manages, preserves unrelated query parameters and keeps an existing page anchor. Blank optional fields remove their previous values.
UTM tags are not conversion tracking
A tagged link does not install GA4, record a lead or prove that an advert caused a sale. You still need working measurement, the appropriate consent flow and a meaningful conversion event. Do not add campaign tags to internal navigation: that makes incoming-campaign analysis harder to interpret. For Google Ads, retain auto-tagging and click identifiers; manual UTMs do not replace the Ads-to-Analytics link or GCLID capture.
Common questions
Can I tag WhatsApp or email links?
You can tag the website URL that you share in WhatsApp or email. The destination must be a public HTTP or HTTPS webpage, not a mailto, tel or javascript link. Use a source and medium that describe where the link will be shared.
Will this change my website?
No. It constructs a URL without opening the destination or changing your site. Test the finished link on your own website before publishing a campaign, especially if a booking system or checkout may reject extra parameters.
Does it send my input to Google?
The builder does not send your entered URL or tags to Google. They are processed for this response and are not saved as a lead. Normal page analytics still follows the website cookie settings. Never paste private or signed links.
